“Having worked as a doctor for more than 20 years both in the community and in hospital settings it is no longer possible to deny the significant impact our lifestyles and our environment have on our health. Chronic diseases are increasing globally causing significant morbidity and mortality. Although the cause of chronic disease is multifactorial, lifestyle medicine by using a holistic approach tackling areas such as nutrition, movement, stress management, promoting social connections and sleep can reduce many of the modifiable risk factors that can cause disease. Lifestyle medicine provides evidence-based approaches, it empowers patients, promotes self-efficacy and encourages people to make small sustainable changes to promote health and wellbeing. As a clinician it is a hugely rewarding way to practice.”
